On the occasion of the World sickle cell day, which takes place on 19 June 2022, the national reference center for sickle cell disease of the Georges-Pompidou European hospital has produced this video to relay news from the reference center.

Sickle cell disease is the most common genetic disease in France (between 19,000 and 32,000 patients) and in the world. Despite the progress brought by screening for the disease at birth and a better understanding of the disease, sickle cell disease remains a serious, disabling and fatal disease, considerably reducing the life expectancy of those affected (≃ 40 years).

In this video, Professor Jean-Benoît Arlet, head of the national reference center for sickle cell disease of the Georges-Pompidou European hospital, presents the various research projects underway. Anne Corbasson, care coordination nurse for sickle cell disease, looks at other research activities and the therapeutic education workshops developed by the reference center. Carole Barthélémy, an internal medicine nurse, presents the training courses for nurses in sickle cell disease care. Finally, Marie Charmettan, also an internal medicine nurse, explains how to improve patients’ daily lives through meditation.
